It Still Ain’t Over

EditorialA Letter To The Editor got me thinking that it might be time for me to write a follow up to my July Editorial, “COVID-19, It Ain’t Over.” This time, I’m calling it, “It Still Ain’t Over.”

Brookhaven Hamlet had been relatively stable hovering at 63 to 66 cases of COVID-19 from mid-July to August 26th. Then, from August 29th to September 10th it bumped up to 68 cases, still not bad. However, three days later, on September 13th, the number of cases in Brookhaven Hamlet jumped by about 20%, or 13 cases, to 81 cases, NOT GOOD. We’re probably looking at the result of one or two Labor Day Weekend parties, but it just goes to show how quickly things can change if you’re not careful. We just have to take the Coronavirus seriously.

Because this has dragged on so long, over six months now, we’ve all settled into a routine that we’ve gotten comfortable with. Things just don’t seem as bad, but they, for the most part, are, just as bad. There really isn’t much difference between how dangerous COVID-19 is today and how dangerous it was back in March. We all have to try to keep that in mind.

When we all started this journey, the powers that be led us to believe that if we were all good little boys and girls for two or three weeks, this would all be over. Well, it isn’t over and there’s no end, for sure, in sight. We just have to continue to be careful, not take any unnecessary chances, and maybe by next summer things will settle into a much wished for, “New Normal.”
