St. James Episcopal Church, Brookhaven Celebrates 145 Years

St. James

Sometime before 1872, the desire to establish an Episcopal Community in Brookhaven was born. The Rev. Charles Douglas held services in the home of Charles Sweezey which stood on the northeast corner of Beaver Dam and Fireplace Neck Road. After appealing to Bishop Abram Littlejohn, St. James was established as a congregation in the Episcopal Diocese of Long Island in 1873. The church was built in 1874.

St. James is a fixture in the Hamlet of Brookhaven. As they celebrate their 145th Anniversary, the present day St. James congregation is a small, committed, loving and diverse one. Their members come from the immediate area and from neighboring communities to worship and to be inspired to be Christ's presence in the world.

They are dealing with the same challenges that many other congregations and institutions have. To offset the cost of the repairing and repainting of the trim around their church and the wrought iron and stone slabs located at the front entrance of St. James, they will be having a Festive Brunch Fundraiser at the Long Island Aquarium on July 29th.

In addition, they have started a Fund Drive. If they raise $5500, their Vicar, the Reverend Hickman Alexandre, will take the plunge and do the Shark Dive at the July 29th event.
