• 6.7% tested positive on Long Island; 7.7% positive on a 7-day average.
• 5.4 reinfection rate per 100,000 on Long Island was reported for week ending June 21, 2022.

** Important Note: As of Monday, April 4, the federal Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) no longer requires testing facilities that use COVID-19 rapid antigen tests to report negative results. As a result, New York State's percent positive metric will be computed using only lab-reported PCR results. Positive antigen tests will still be reported to New York State and reporting of new daily cases and cases per 100k will continue to include both PCR and antigen tests. Due to this change and other factors, including changes in testing practices, the most reliable metric to measure virus impact on a community is the case per 100,000 data -- not percent positivity.

Why are we starting to report local numbers again?

On May 22nd we explained why we stopped reporting local Covid-19 numbers on April 24th. You can find that explanation below. In response to your requests, we’re starting to report those numbers again now with the caveat that these new numbers should not be compared to those prior to April 24th. Hopefully, you’ll be able to compare these new numbers to those in the future.

Why did Bellport.com stop reporting “local” Covid-19 numbers on April 17th?

In order to report our local Covid-19 numbers, we have to first visit many different sources. Before we’ll report those numbers, the numbers have to make sense. We’d rather not report a number than report one we consider suspicious. That’s been the case since April 17, 2022. When we checked the numbers on April 24, 2022, we found that the local numbers had suddenly dropped by 60% without explanation. We decided to not publish the numbers and instead wait to see what would happen. Was it a single events or would the numbers remain low?

Over time, the local numbers remained lower than they had been prior to April 24th and they slowly grew, but they were still about 20% lower than we would have expected them to be so we’ve been waiting to see what would happen.

All of this happened once before. The local numbers suddenly dropped without explanation back in June of 2020, and then just as suddenly, started back up. The explanation then was that Suffolk County had put in a new computer system, but this time, although we’ve contacted many agencies, there’s been no explanation.

We’re going to wait a little longer and if the local numbers remain low, we’ll start reporting them again with an asterisk * saying these new numbers should not be compared to previous ones.
