U2 Tribute Band, "2U," In Concert

The Library’s Second Annual Spring Outdoor Concert will feature the popular U2 tribute band, “2U” on Saturday, June 12th at 2:00pm in the Library’s parking lot. The band has toured the world and received praise and acclaim for their stunning, detailed replication of the U2 live experience. 2U’s song list includes the hits, “With or Without You,” “One,” “Sunday Bloody Sunday,” “Beautiful Day,” “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For,” “New Year’s Day,” “Vertigo,” “Mysterious Ways,” “Gloria,” “Even Better Than the Real Thing,” as well as many other fan-favorites and lesser-known songs.

A portion of the Library parking lot will be blocked off for the day and a limited number of chairs will be available so you are encouraged to bring your own chairs or blankets. In case of rain, the show will be moved to the program rooms inside of the Library.


Author, Therone Shellman Speaks

On Wednesday, May 12th, Author, Therone Shellman spoke about his newest book, “Survivor: I changed the rules, part 1” at the South Country Library. His autobiography is about surviving impossibilities and in the end, dictating and defining your own reality.







Therone ShellmanAs a product of a broken home, throughout his youth, Mr. Shellman moved in a world of crime and violence which landed him in prison. Mr. Shellman persevered and not only survived, but transformed himself. With those present, Mr. Shellman discussed his journey from a tough beginning to his current life as a successful author and a positive voice for today’s youth.

TicketYou can now get discount tickets for Splish Splash Waterpark and Atlantis Marine World at the South Country Library. A limited number of tickets are on sale in the Children's Room beginning on Monday, June 14th.





Library Gardening Tasks

GardenWould you like to help? The South Country Library has several lovely gardens and grassy areas that are maintained by professionals. Sometimes, there are light gardening tasks that need to be taken care of between regular landscaper visits. If you would like to help with these tasks, call the Library Director, Mary Haines, at 286-0818 to put your name on a list of occasional volunteers. We will call you when we need some extra help. Remember to bring gloves and small gardening tools.


New Genealogy Database

familyThe South Country Library now has access to Footnote. Footnote helps you find and share historic documents. Many never-before-seen historic documents are available to you through Footnote’s unique partnerships with The National Archives, the Library of Congress and other institutions. Footnote joins HeritageQuest in being available anywhere. Ancestry.com is still available at the Library.




New Adult Program: You, A Laptop & A Librarian

ComputerNow you can receive one-to-one instruction on basic computer use and research. A Library laptop is provided. Librarians are available to help you with the basics of creating an e-mail account, Internet use, database research, Microsoft Word and more based on Librarians’ knowledge. Each lesson will focus on only one topic. Appointments are approximately 45 minutes and are available during mornings and afternoons. Please call the Reference Desk at 631-286-0818 to schedule your appointment.


Catastrophe Readiness Kits Now Available

Survival KitReadiness begins with you! Don’t be caught off-guard by an emergency such as a hurricane, power outage, or flood. Empower yourself and your family to deal with the unexpected with this informational kit. You will be provided with tips, booklets, web-sites and phone numbers that will help you to prepare and make your family safer when faced with a catastrophic event. Please visit the Reference Desk starting Monday, May 11th to pick up your free copy of our Catastrophe Readiness Kit. Supplies are limited; one kit per family, please. *Don’t forget to sign up for the Emergency Preparedness program at the Library offered by the American Red Cross and Office of Emergency Management.

Changes To Our Online Catalog

  • The wording has changed for the County Catalog (all of the books in the libraries of Suffolk County). It is now listed as ALL LIBRARIES.

  • When a book is in a library, the catalog will now say AVAILABLE in place of Check Shelf.

  • Patrons may now rate a book, giving it from one to five stars.

  • When you want to put a reserve hold on a book, you need to find the item and then click on the red REQUEST button.

  • If you find material that you would like to pick up at another library, just click on the library under LOCATION, and you will find directions, a map, and the library’s hours.

  • You can find a review for a book by clicking on the REVIEWS button. There is a “MY READING HISTORY” feature. If you would like to activate it, please contact a librarian.


New Look For The Library's Website

South Country Library’s website has a new look, and new features such as Rosetta Stone, a new online language learning center, and Learning Expres, online interactive practice tests and series of tutorial courses. Look for MyLibraryDV, an on-demand video downloading service to complement SuffolkWave, which includes downloadable audiobooks, videos, and music, and is already available. The newly designed website will soon feature a revamped “Good Books” section and a 24 hour online reference help service.


New Baby Packets

The Library has put together a variety of information that will be helpful to new parents. Each packet includes a free gift for the baby. This packet is available free of charge to any South Country resident who has a newborn baby or is expecting a baby.


Pre-Paid Printing Cards

Remember: If you are going to print more than 10 pages, you will have to stop at the Circulation Desk and purchase a pre-paid printing card.


Plastic Library Cards and Key-Chain Cards

As requested by many patrons, new plastic library cards are now available with a separate key-chain card. They are in the traditional colors, blue for adults, green for YAs, and yellow for children. If you are applying for a card for the first time, your card has expired, or you have lost your card (replacement fee $), come to the Circulation Desk and apply for one of these new cards.


On Our Website: History Resource Center

Students, teachers, and historians can now find U.S historical materials from pre-colonial times to the present, as well as world history materials in the History Resource Center (U.S. and World) in the Virtual Reference Collection (VRC) on our website. All searches group results into Reference Materials, Periodical, Primary Sources, and Maps and Multimedia, as well as related subjects.

You can search by Subject to find information by topic, or search by Person to find a person or category of people. On the Person Search page you can enter a complete name or parts of a name, a nationality, ethnicity, profession, birth or death year , or birth or death place. There is a Chronology feature in the History Resource Center: U.S. which is intended to highlight the major events that shaped the United States.

To access the History Resource Center information go to:

South Country Library homepage, select the "VRC & Databases," then select "VRC," then "History," then "History Resource Center: U.S. or World." To access this database from home, you will need a Library PIN#. Ask at the Reference Desk for more information.


The Suffolk Historic Newspapers collection is now available on the South Country Library website. Four local historic newspapers have been digitized for easy access:

The Long Islander (Huntington) 1839 - 1861
The Corrector (Sag Harbor) 1858 - 1871
South Side Signal ( Babylon) 1869 - 1879
The Long Island Traveler (Southold) 1880 - 1892

Genealogists, students, scholars, and history buffs can browse, or search the entire digital archive. You can view articles separately or as they appear on the full newspaper page. Pages and articles can be printed, saved, and e-mailed. Look for the link to Suffolk Historic Newspapers on the South Country Library webpage at our website and click on the community links page.


We all know that libraries have books, magazines and newspapers in print. We’ve also gotten used to borrowing CDs, DVDs, and Talking Books. We have Internet computers for use at the Library, and Internet access available anywhere outside the Library via our South Country Library website. Now the Library is providing value-added Internet content by purchasing special databases that are available FREE through our South Country webpage.

Need Magazine Or Newspaper Articles? Click on ‘Research Databases’ from the central menu, choose ‘Virtual Reference Collection’, and click on ‘Magazines’ or ‘Newspapers’.

Want An Address Or Phone Number Anywhere In The World? Click on ‘Research Databases’ from the main menu, choose ‘Virtual Reference Collection’, click on ‘SuffolkWeb Ready Reference at the bottom of the list, and then the ‘telephone directories’.

And How About Finding Just The Right Book To Take On Vacation With You? Click on ‘Research Databases’ from the main menu, scroll down and click on ‘NoveList’, choose the ‘Browse Lists’ tab at the top, then ‘Explore Fiction’, and get reading!
