The legislation Assemblywoman Patricia Eddington (D/I/WF-Medford) authored, permitting the village of Bellport to lease certain land for the construction of a cell tower, was signed into law by Governor Paterson (Ch. 171 of 2008). She was joined by Senator Caesar Trunzo, who authored the measure in the Senate, Bellport Mayor David Pate, former Bellport Mayor Frank Trotta and the South Country Ambulance Company Chief, Gregory C. Miglino, Jr. Eddington explained the tower will improve cellular communications for residents and improve public safety.

Bellport’s new cell phone tower. Amazingly, it’s not really visible from anyplace in the Village!
“We have come to rely on cell phones for not only instantaneous communications between friends and family but as a safety tool to reach police or others in times of emergencies,” said Assemblywoman Patricia Eddington. “This measure allows the village to construct a cell tower in a dead zone.”

"The legislation I passed with Assemblywoman Eddington transforms an underutilized plot into a valuable revenue producing resource for the village," said Senator Trunzo. "I am proud we were able to work together to improve the village's recreational facilities and cell phone service without raising taxes."

“On behalf of the residents of Bellport, I would like to thank Assemblywoman Eddington and Senator Trunzo for their assistance in having the state approve the land for a cell tower,” said Mayor David Pate. “It is also important to recognize the efforts of former Mayor Frank Trotta whose leadership and perseverance on this issue made it a reality.”

“Improved communications between local emergency personnel, including the Suffolk County Police, Bellport Fire Department and South Country Ambulance, was paramount in pushing this legislation forward. “This measure is a win-win because it brings in needed revenue to the village and enhances communications with first responders’,” concluded Eddington.

The new cell tower is expected to start operating within the next few weeks.
